What is 309?

309 (UNS S30900) is a high-chromium, high-nickel (23Cr-13Ni) austenitic heat-resisting stainless steel used where oxidation and scaling resistance above 900 °C is required — furnace parts, radiant tubes, kiln linings, heat-treatment fixtures and boiler baffles. Its higher alloy content gives better hot strength and sulfidation/oxidation resistance than 304, and the same composition family is widely used as 309/309L filler metal for joining dissimilar and clad steels. Main limits are sigma-phase and carbide embrittlement after long holds in the 600–900 °C range, low room-temperature strength compared with hardenable steels, and poor resistance to chloride pitting relative to Mo-bearing grades. 309 has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 309 has a yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 63% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

What is 309 used for?

  • Furnace parts and muffles
  • Heat-treatment fixtures and baskets
  • Radiant tubes and burner components
  • Kiln and furnace linings
  • Boiler baffles and supports
  • High-temperature exhaust systems
  • Dissimilar-metal weld transition pieces

Advantages

  • High service temperature — 1,050°C (1,922 °F), better than 91% of stainless steel grades
  • Tough — resists crack growth — 200 MPa·√m (182 ksi·√in), better than 86% of stainless steel grades
  • Ductile — tolerates forming and impact — 45%, better than 76% of stainless steel grades
  • Forms and bends easily — 68/100, better than 75% of stainless steel grades

Limitations

  • High embodied carbon — 6 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 88% of stainless steel grades

Working with 309

Is 309 easy to machine?

Gummy and strongly work-hardening: run rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, 20–30 % lower speed than 304, heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid glazing and work-hardened skins.

Can 309 be welded?

Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 309/309L filler; no preheat needed, keep interpass low, limit heat input and avoid 600–900 °C holds to reduce sigma-phase and carbide embrittlement.

Can 309 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms like 304 but needs about 20 % more power and generous bend radii due to the high work-hardening rate; hot work at 1150–1200 °C followed by solution anneal at 1040–1150 °C.

Manufacturability
