What is E317?
E317 is an austenitic stainless SMAW electrode (UNS W31710) carrying higher molybdenum than E316, supplied in -15, -16 and -17 coating classes. The extra Mo raises pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in aggressive chloride and acid media, and the deposit runs about 440 MPa yield, 600 MPa tensile, 38% elongation and 185 HB (90 HRB) with a corrosion rating of 74. It carries standard carbon, so for as-welded service where intergranular attack is a risk the low-carbon E317L is the obvious alternative; both cost more and are less widely stocked than E316L. E317 has a density of 7.98 g/cm³ (0.288 lb/in³), heavier than 85% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). E317 has a yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — stronger than 68% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 38% and the elastic modulus is 195 GPa (28.3 Msi).

Working with E317
Is E317 easy to machine?
Weld deposit machines like 317 stainless: gummy and work-hardening — use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, heavy feed and flood coolant.
Can E317 be welded?
SMAW with short arc, stringer beads and interpass ≤150 °C; keep 4–10 FN delta ferrite for hot-cracking resistance; redry electrodes (≈250–300 °C, 1 h for -15 basic type) before use.
Can E317 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; the deposit is ductile (≈38 % elongation) and tolerates weld-repair peening and light straightening.
