What is SUS316J1?
SUS316J1 is a JIS-specific 316-type austenitic stainless with a copper addition that lowers the work-hardening rate and improves resistance to mild acids. It is used for deep-drawn and cold-headed sheet parts such as kitchenware, tableware and process linings, and is supplied annealed, as 2B or BA cold-rolled sheet, hot-rolled plate, cold-drawn bar and 1/4H to full-hard tempers. Annealed properties are close to 316 (250 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 55 % elongation, 150 HB) with service to 800 °C, but stock outside Japan is limited and the copper raises weld hot-cracking sensitivity; 316L is the nearest widely available substitute. SUS316J1 has a density of 7.98 g/cm³ (0.288 lb/in³), heavier than 85% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,385°C (2,525 °F). SUS316J1 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 91% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 55% and the elastic modulus is 193 GPa (28 Msi).

Working with SUS316J1
Is SUS316J1 easy to machine?
Gummy and work-hardening like 316: use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, 60–110 m/min with flood coolant, and never dwell or rub.
Can SUS316J1 be welded?
Weld with 316L/ER316L (or matching Cu-bearing filler for full corrosion match), low heat input and interpass <150 °C; the Cu addition raises hot-cracking sensitivity so keep a small amount of delta ferrite and avoid heavy restraint.
Can SUS316J1 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-drawing and cold-heading behaviour — lower work hardening than 304/316 allows deeper draws with fewer interstage anneals; use chlorine-free drawing lubricants and Cr-free tooling coatings to avoid galling.
