What is S35115?

S35115 is a high-nickel austenitic stainless steel alloyed with molybdenum and copper for hot sulfuric and phosphoric acid service in chemical processing equipment. Annealed material is rated at 265 MPa yield, 600 MPa tensile and 45% elongation at 165 HB (85 HRB), with internal ratings of 82/100 for corrosion resistance and 70/100 for formability; it is stocked annealed, hot-rolled annealed and pickled, cold-rolled annealed, cold drawn, quarter hard and as-welded. The nickel-molybdenum-copper content makes the grade expensive and slow to machine, and welds need over-alloyed nickel-base filler. For less aggressive acid duty 316L is the cheaper option. S35115 has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,340°C (2,444 °F). Working with S35115

Is S35115 easy to machine?

Gummy and strongly work hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed to stay under the hardened skin, and copious high-pressure coolant; expect ~25 % of 1212 speeds.

Can S35115 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with an over-alloyed Ni-base filler (e.g. ERNiCrMo type) to offset Mo segregation; keep interpass below ~150 °C, no preheat, and solution-anneal + pickle for the most aggressive hot-acid duty.

Can S35115 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms well but needs roughly 50 % more press force than 304 and generous bend radii; hot work in a narrow window around 1100–1180 °C followed by rapid water quench.

S35115 — frequently asked

What is S35115 used for?

S35115 is typically used for sulfuric and phosphoric acid processing equipment, chemical plant components, acid tank and vessel linings, heat exchanger tubing and tubesheets, pump and valve internals for acid service and piping and fittings in acid circuits. In short: hot sulfuric acid grade; mo and Cu bearing austenitic; needs Ni-base weld filler.

What is the yield strength of S35115?

S35115 has a typical yield strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — weaker than 81% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is S35115 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 79% of stainless steel grades). Gummy and strongly work hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed to stay under the hardened skin, and copious high-pressure coolant; expect ~25 % of 1212 speeds.

Can S35115 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100). GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with an over-alloyed Ni-base filler (e.g. ERNiCrMo type) to offset Mo segregation; keep interpass below ~150 °C, no preheat, and solution-anneal + pickle for the most aggressive hot-acid duty.

Cold forms well but needs roughly 50 % more press force than 304 and generous bend radii; hot work in a narrow window around 1100–1180 °C followed by rapid water quench.

What is the maximum service temperature of S35115?

S35115 is rated for continuous use to about 500°C (932 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between S35115 Annealed and S35115-CD?
