Compare all 4 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Solution annealed ~1050–1100 °C, rapid cool | Pick when maximum room-temperature ductility/toughness or improved machinability before final fitting is needed, or to reset a part after long intermediate-temperature exposure. | 245 | 490 | 16 | 175 HB | 1.9 % IACS |
FDefault As fabricated | Standard supply condition for furnace fixtures and grates — the coarse as-cast carbide network is fully adequate because the part will operate at 900–1050 °C anyway. | 265 | 520 | 12 | 190 HB | 1.9 % IACS |
Investment (precision) cast, as-cast | For small, thin-walled furnace fixtures, chain links, trays and baskets where near-net shape and finer grain give slightly better ductility than sand casting. | 270 | 530 | 14 | 190 HB | 1.9 % IACS |
Centrifugally cast | Choose for radiant tubes, rolls and sleeves — the dense, directionally solidified wall gives higher strength and less porosity than static sand castings. | 280 | 550 | 10 | 200 HB | 1.9 % IACS |
What is 1.4837?
EN 1.4837 (GX40CrNiSi25-12, ASTM A297 Grade HH, UNS J93503) is a silicon-alloyed 25Cr-12Ni austenitic-ferritic cast heat-resistant stainless steel for oxidizing service up to about 1050 °C. It is specified for furnace fixtures, kiln furniture and radiant components and is produced as static, centrifugal and investment castings. As-cast values are 265 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation and 190 HB. The high carbon content gives hot strength but low room-temperature ductility, and the alloy embrittles after long exposure; use 25Cr-20Ni 1.4848 (HK) for more severe temperatures. 1.4837 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). 1.4837 has a yield strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 81% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 185 GPa (26.8 Msi).

Working with 1.4837
Is 1.4837 easy to machine?
Machine like a hard cast austenitic: rigid setup, sharp carbide or ceramic tooling, low speed with heavy feed, generous coolant, and expect abrasive carbide wear plus work hardening if the tool dwells.
Can 1.4837 be welded?
Weldable by SMAW/GTAW with matching 25/12 (E310) or over-alloyed 25/20 filler; preheat 150–250 °C, keep heat input moderate, slow-cool to avoid carbide/sigma cracking, and re-solution anneal if maximum ductility is required.
Can 1.4837 be formed, bent or molded?
Cast to shape only — no cold forming; use generous fillets, uniform walls, chills and risers to control hot tearing and shrinkage, and allow for ~2 % pattern shrink.

Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on 1.4837?
Shot blast and grind cast surfaces; no anodizing — for extra scale life above 1000 °C consider aluminising or ceramic wash, and passivate only if aqueous service is expected.

What is the maximum service temperature of 1.4837?
1.4837 is rated for continuous use to about 1,050°C (1,922 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 1.4837-F and 1.4837-SA?
F is the default condition — standard supply condition for furnace fixtures and grates — the coarse as-cast carbide network is fully adequate because the part will operate at 900–1050 °C anyway. SA: pick when maximum room-temperature ductility/toughness or improved machinability before final fitting is needed, or to reset a part after long intermediate-temperature exposure. Yield strength is 265 MPa in F versus 245 MPa in SA.
