What is 1.4313?
1.4313 (X3CrNiMo13-4, UNS S41500) is a low-carbon 13Cr-4Ni-Mo soft martensitic stainless supplied quenched and tempered, the wrought counterpart of cast CA6NM. In the default Q&T condition it provides 700 MPa yield, 870 MPa tensile, 18 % elongation and 265 HB (26 HRC), which suits large forgings, bar and plate for hydraulic machinery that must be welded and repair-welded. Corrosion resistance is moderate and service is limited to about 400 °C; cold formability is poor, so parts are machined rather than formed. Choose 1.4418 when better general corrosion resistance is required. 1.4313 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,440°C (2,624 °F). 1.4313 has a yield strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) and a tensile strength of 870 MPa (126 ksi) — stronger than 92% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4313
Is 1.4313 easy to machine?
Machines like a tough 30-HRC alloy steel: rigid setups, sharp positive-rake coated carbide, ~60–110 m/min turning, heavy feeds and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing and built-up edge.
Can 1.4313 be welded?
Very good for a martensitic grade — GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 410NiMo (E410NiMo) filler, preheat/interpass ~100–160 °C for heavy sections and PWHT temper at 580–620 °C (double temper for optimum toughness); keep hydrogen low.
Can 1.4313 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot work at 1150–900 °C followed by slow cool and soft anneal; cold forming is limited to gentle bends in the +A condition — final shape is normally machined after quench and temper.

What surface finishes work on 1.4313?
Passivate (ASTM A967 nitric or citric) after machining; takes a good mechanical or electropolished finish, and is commonly hard-chrome plated or HVOF-coated on wear surfaces — avoid cathodic overprotection/plating hydrogen without bake-out.
