What is 1.4372?

1.4372 (X12CrMnNiN17-7-5) is the European equivalent of AISI 201 / S20100 (12Cr17Mn6Ni5N), a low-nickel austenitic stainless in which manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel. It is chosen where cost reduction against 304 matters but formability must be kept: annealed material runs about 420 MPa yield, 800 MPa tensile, 52 % elongation and 200 HB (92 HRB) with a formability score of 78, and it is available annealed, BA, 1/4H to FH, C1000 to C1300, cold drawn and HRAP. Oxidation-limited service reaches roughly 760 °C, but corrosion resistance is below 304 and machinability is poor; move to 304 or 316 for chloride or wet-service parts. 1.4372 has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 65% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4372 has a yield strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 64% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 52% and the elastic modulus is 197 GPa (28.6 Msi).

Working with 1.4372

Is 1.4372 easy to machine?

Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed with no dwell, and generous coolant; expect ~40–45 % of 1212 speeds.

Can 1.4372 be welded?

Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/RSW without preheat; use 308L or high-Mn 307 filler, keep interpass low and avoid heavy heat input to limit sensitisation and N loss.

Can 1.4372 be formed, bent or molded?

Deep draws and roll forms well but work-hardens faster than 304, so allow higher press tonnage, more interstage annealing and larger springback compensation.

1.4372 has a typical yield strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 64% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 9 listed tempers.

Is 1.4372 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 51% of stainless steel grades). Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed with no dwell, and generous coolant; expect ~40–45 % of 1212 speeds.

Can 1.4372 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100). Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/RSW without preheat; use 308L or high-Mn 307 filler, keep interpass low and avoid heavy heat input to limit sensitisation and N loss.
