What is XM-15?
XM-15 (UNS S38100) is a silicon-enhanced 18Cr-18Ni austenitic stainless steel developed to avoid the sensitization and intergranular corrosion seen with 304 and 316 in nitric acid service. Annealed stock gives 260 MPa yield, 590 MPa tensile and 52% elongation at 160 HB (82 HRB), with service to 950 °C, a weldability rating of 80/100 and formability of 78/100; it is available annealed, hot rolled, cold drawn and in quarter-, half-, three-quarter- and full-hard tempers. The 2% silicon makes it more abrasive to machine than 304, and with a corrosion rating of 66/100 it is not a substitute for molybdenum grades in chloride service. 304L or 321 covers general fabrication work. XM-15 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 59% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). XM-15 has a yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) — weaker than 84% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 52% and the elastic modulus is 196 GPa (28.4 Msi).

Working with XM-15
Is XM-15 easy to machine?
Gummy and work-hardening like 304 but more abrasive due to 2% Si — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy constant feed, no dwelling, and flood coolant.
Can XM-15 be welded?
Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 308/309-type or matching high-Si filler; low heat input, no preheat, and normally no post-weld anneal since the grade resists sensitization.
Can XM-15 be formed, bent or molded?
Good cold formability with a lower work-hardening rate than 301/304 thanks to 18% Ni; allow generous bend radii in hard tempers and interstage anneal at 1040–1120 °C followed by rapid cooling.

What surface finishes work on XM-15?
Pickle and passivate (ASTM A967 nitric or citric) after fabrication; the Si-rich scale from hot work needs aggressive pickling or abrasive removal, and the alloy polishes and electropolishes well.
