What is 1.4436?
1.4436 (X3CrNiMo17-13-3, S31600/316) is a standard-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless close to 316 but with slightly higher nickel and molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance. Engineers use it for general marine and chemical hardware in sheet, plate, bar, cold-drawn sections, bright-annealed tube and welded forms, at 270 MPa yield, 590 MPa tensile and 50 % elongation annealed. Because carbon is not restricted to 0.03 %, heavy welded sections can sensitize in the 500–800 °C range; use 1.4435/316L for welded corrosion service and 1.4439 where higher pitting resistance is needed. 1.4436 has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). 1.4436 has a yield strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) — weaker than 79% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4436
Is 1.4436 easy to machine?
Gummy and work-hardening: use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, ~60–120 m/min cutting speed and flood coolant; never dwell or rub.
Can 1.4436 be welded?
Readily welded by TIG/MIG/SMAW/laser with ER316L or 318 filler, low heat input and interpass <150 °C; back-purge for corrosion service and pickle/passivate afterwards, PWHT normally not required for thin sections.
Can 1.4436 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-drawing and bending in the annealed state, but high work-hardening rate demands ~50% more press force than carbon steel, generous bend radii and interstage annealing for severe draws.
