What is E316LMn?
E316LMn is a manganese-enriched, low-carbon 316L-type stainless electrode (UNS W31622) with modified ferrite control, listed in -15, -16 and -17 coating classes and in as-welded and cryogenic-qualified conditions. It is chosen for cryogenic vessels and for joining nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steels, with deposits near 400 MPa yield, 610 MPa tensile, 38% elongation and 200 HB, rated to 450 °C and a corrosion score of 72. The fully austenitic 0 FN deposit is hot-crack sensitive and needs disciplined low heat input; where cryogenic toughness is not required, standard E316L is easier to run. E316LMn has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). E316LMn has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) — stronger than 57% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 38% and the elastic modulus is 196 GPa (28.4 Msi).
What is E316LMn used for?
- cryogenic storage tanks
- LNG equipment
- nitrogen-alloyed stainless fabrication

Working with E316LMn
Is E316LMn easy to machine?
Deposit work-hardens strongly and is gummy — use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feed, rigid setup and flood coolant; grind slag/oxide off before finish cuts.
Can E316LMn be welded?
Redry electrodes (rutile ~150 °C, basic ~250–300 °C), weld with low heat input, stringer beads, interpass below ~150 °C and no preheat — the 0 FN fully austenitic deposit is hot-crack sensitive if the pool is large or crater-filled hot.
Can E316LMn be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; the deposit itself is highly ductile (≈35–40 % elongation) and tolerates cold straightening of welded assemblies without cracking.
