What is 1.4821?
EN 1.4821 (X15CrNiSi25-4) is a high-silicon 25Cr-4Ni heat-resistant steel with a duplex ferritic-austenitic matrix and high carbon, used for furnace and combustion equipment up to about 1100 °C. It is chosen for oxidation resistance and hot strength in cast, forged and hot-rolled parts, offering 470 MPa yield, 780 MPa tensile, 20% elongation and about 230 HB after solution annealing. Ductility and machinability are low (roughly 30% of AISI 1212) and welded joints lose ductility after high-temperature service; where better weldability and ductility are needed, fully austenitic 1.4841 is the usual alternative. 1.4821 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4821 has a yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 780 MPa (113 ksi) — stronger than 74% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Advantages
- High service temperature — 1,100°C (2,012 °F), better than 96% of stainless steel grades

Working with 1.4821
Is 1.4821 easy to machine?
Machine slowly with rigid setups, sharp carbide tools, heavy positive feed and generous coolant — the high-carbon duplex matrix work-hardens and the Cr carbides are abrasive (~30 % of AISI 1212).
Can 1.4821 be welded?
Weldable with care by TIG/MMA using over-alloyed austenitic or matching 25Cr-Ni filler, 150–300 °C preheat and low heat input; post-weld solution anneal is preferred, and welded joints lose ductility after high-temperature service.
Can 1.4821 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot form at roughly 1150–950 °C followed by solution annealing; cold forming is limited to gentle bends because of the high yield strength and low ductility.

What surface finishes work on 1.4821?
Pickle and passivate after annealing or welding to remove scale; can be ground and polished, but not anodised — service oxide (chromia) scale forms naturally in use.
