What is S30441?
S30441 is a nitrogen-strengthened 18Cr-9Ni austenitic stainless that uses interstitial nitrogen to raise strength above standard 304 while keeping austenitic weldability and formability. Annealed material gives 390 MPa yield, 700 MPa tensile and 48 % elongation at 195 HB, allowing thinner walls in pressure parts; it is available annealed, cold drawn, in quarter- through full-hard tempers and as-welded. Maximum service temperature is 800 °C and corrosion resistance (score 60) is comparable to 304, so it is not suitable for chloride-rich service. Nitrogen loss in the arc slightly softens weld metal; use 316L or a Mo-bearing grade where pitting is the concern. S30441 has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). S30441 has a yield strength of 390 MPa (56.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — stronger than 54% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 48% and the elastic modulus is 195 GPa (28.3 Msi).
What is S30441 used for?
- Pressure vessels and shells
- Structural members needing more strength than 304
- Cryogenic and process tank sections

Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 220 MPa·√m (200.2 ksi·√in), better than 97% of stainless steel grades

- Ductile — tolerates forming and impact — 48%, better than 85% of stainless steel grades
- Readily welded — 80/100, better than 80% of stainless steel grades

Working with S30441
Is S30441 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide, heavy feeds, low-to-moderate speeds and flood coolant; never dwell or rub.
Can S30441 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 308H (or 308L for corrosive service) filler, no preheat, low interpass temperature and no PWHT; nitrogen loss in the arc slightly softens the weld metal.
Can S30441 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms well but with higher forming loads and springback than 304; anneal between severe draws and allow generous bend radii for hard tempers.
