What is 1.4845?
1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21, 310S/S31008) is a 25Cr-20Ni austenitic stainless from the heat-resistant end of the 3xx family, relying on high chromium and nickel for oxidation resistance up to about 1150 °C. It is chosen for furnace and heat-treatment hardware in plate, bar, seamless tube and forgings; annealed material gives 240 MPa yield, 560 MPa tensile, 45 % elongation and 150 HB. The limits are slow machining (roughly 40 % of 1212 productivity) and fully austenitic weld metal that is hot-cracking sensitive. Where lower carbon is preferred for welded assemblies, 1.4951 (X6CrNi25-20) is the closest alternative. 1.4845 has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4845 has a yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) — weaker than 96% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4845
Is 1.4845 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds with no dwell, low-to-moderate speeds and copious coolant; expect roughly 40 % of 1212 productivity.
Can 1.4845 be welded?
Weld with matching 310/25-20 filler by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW without preheat and with low interpass temperature; fully austenitic weld metal is hot-cracking prone, so keep heat input and restraint low and dilution controlled.
Can 1.4845 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms well but needs ~50 % more force than 304 and generous bend radii; hot work at 1150–1200 °C and finish above 950 °C, then solution anneal at 1030–1180 °C with rapid cooling.

What surface finishes work on 1.4845?
Pickle and passivate (ASTM A967) or electropolish after fabrication to restore the chromium oxide film; not anodisable — mechanical polishing or a bright-annealed finish gives reflective surfaces.
