What is S39274?
S39274 (DP3W) is a tungsten- and copper-modified super duplex stainless steel developed by Sumitomo for improved resistance to localized corrosion in sour, chloride-rich oilfield environments. Solution-annealed bar and forgings provide 620 MPa yield, 860 MPa tensile, 30% elongation and 270 HB (27 HRC), and cold-worked conditions are stocked at 80, 95, 110, 125 and 140 ksi yield levels for downhole hardware. Working with S39274
Is S39274 easy to machine?
Machines like a tough super duplex: rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide, low speed / heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened layer, and copious high-pressure coolant.
Can S39274 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 25Cr super duplex or Ni-base filler; keep heat input ~0.5–1.5 kJ/mm, interpass <150 °C, back-purge with Ar (+N₂) and avoid autogenous welds to hold 35–55% ferrite.
Can S39274 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot work 1000–1200 °C then solution anneal ~1080–1120 °C with rapid water quench; cold forming needs roughly twice the load of 316L with high springback.
