Which process for your prototype
The cheapest part is rarely the cheapest path to a working product. If the prototype has to prove function — strength, fits, threads, tolerances — machine it in the real material. Prints are the quick shape check before that, not a substitute for it.

The part has to work: real 6061 or steel, machined threads, bearing fits, and tolerances your assembly depends on. The default for functional prototypes.

What a prototype run costs
The one number that surprises first-time buyers: the single prototype is the expensive one. Setup — CAM programming, fixturing, first-piece inspection — costs the same for 1 part as for 10, so the second and third units are nearly free by comparison.

Design tips before you upload v1
Prototype-stage versions of the DFM checks our engineers run on every quote — each one cuts cost or lead time without changing what you learn from the build.
- Default to aluminum 6061 or ABS. Both machine/print fast and cheap. Switch to the exotic material only when v1 proves the design.
- Tolerance only what mates. Leave ±0.1 mm general and call out tighter bands on the two or three features that need them.
- Take the as-machined finish. Anodize and powder coat are lot charges that sting at quantity 1–3. Save finishes for the looks-like build.
- Order a spare per two parts. Assembly and testing always consume a unit. The marginal part is cheap once setup is paid.
- Split complex geometry. Two simple machined parts with a bolted joint usually beat one 5-axis showpiece on both price and lead time.
- Send STEP, add PDF only for critical callouts. A clean STEP quotes instantly; a drawing is only needed where a tolerance or thread must be guaranteed.

How much does a hardware prototype cost?

Which process should I pick for a first prototype?
If the prototype has to prove function — strength, fits, threads, or any real tolerance — CNC machine it in the actual material: printed plastics are anisotropic and typically hold only ±0.2–0.5 mm. Use 3D printing for early form-and-fit checks before that. Enclosures, brackets, and panels: sheet metal, production-identical from the first unit. Injection molding only makes sense once you need 100+ parts in molded plastic.
Can you keep my prototype design confidential?
Yes. Uploaded files are access-controlled and used only to quote and produce your parts, NDAs are available on request, and manufacturing partners operate under signed confidentiality and quality agreements.
Do I need a 2D drawing or is CAD enough?
A STEP file is enough to quote and build most prototypes. Add a PDF drawing only for critical tolerances, thread callouts, or inspection requirements — those become part of the QC criteria.
