What is E2209?
E2209 is a duplex austenitic-ferritic covered electrode (UNS W39209, AWS A5.4, supplied as E2209-15, -16 and -17) matching 2205 duplex stainless chemistry. It is selected for high strength and chloride pitting resistance, with as-welded deposit near 620 MPa yield, 810 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and 255 HB (25 HRC). Service is limited to 280 C because of 475 C embrittlement and sigma-phase risk, and heat input must be controlled to keep the ferrite/austenite balance. Where only general corrosion resistance is needed, E316L is the cheaper austenitic alternative. E2209 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,385°C (2,525 °F). E2209 has a yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 810 MPa (117 ksi) — stronger than 88% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with E2209
Is E2209 easy to machine?
Weld metal machines like 2205 duplex — rigid setup, sharp carbide, low speed / heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened layer; expect ~25 % of 1212 rating.
Can E2209 be welded?
SMAW electrode for 2205/2304/S31803/S32205 and duplex-to-austenitic or duplex-to-carbon-steel joints; redry per maker (≈250–300 °C for -15/-16), keep interpass ≤150 °C, heat input ~0.5–2.5 kJ/mm, no preheat and normally no PWHT.
Can E2209 be formed, bent or molded?
Not applicable to the electrode itself; the deposited duplex weld metal cold-forms with high springback and roughly double the force of 304, so allow generous bend radii.

What surface finishes work on E2209?
Pickle/passivate (nitric or citric acid paste) after removing slag and heat tint; mechanical brushing must use stainless-only wire wheels to avoid iron contamination.
