What is 1.4376?

1.4376 (X8CrMnNi19-6-3) is a reduced-nickel chromium-manganese austenitic stainless steel, about 19 % Cr with roughly 3 % Ni, available as 2R and 1D sheet and strip, tube and cold-drawn bar in annealed through full-hard and C700–C1300 conditions. Engineers use it where formability and appearance matter more than corrosion margin: annealed material gives 400 MPa yield, 750 MPa tensile, 50 % elongation, 210 HB and a formability score of 75. Corrosion resistance is the lowest of the Cr-Mn group at 42, making it an indoor or coated grade; step up to 1.4373 or 304 for damp and chloride exposure. 1.4376 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4376 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) — stronger than 57% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 197 GPa (28.6 Msi).

Working with 1.4376

Is 1.4376 easy to machine?

Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, no dwell, and generous flood coolant.

Can 1.4376 be welded?

Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/resistance methods with 308L or over-alloyed 307/309L filler; keep heat input low and avoid preheat, no post-weld anneal normally needed on thin gauge.

Can 1.4376 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent deep-drawing and roll-forming, but higher yield and work-hardening rate than 304 means more press force, extra springback compensation and interstage annealing on severe draws.

What is the yield strength of 1.4376?

1.4376 has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) — stronger than 57% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 11 listed tempers.

Is 1.4376 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 51% of stainless steel grades). Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, no dwell, and generous flood coolant.

Can 1.4376 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (75/100). Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/resistance methods with 308L or over-alloyed 307/309L filler; keep heat input low and avoid preheat, no post-weld anneal normally needed on thin gauge.
