What is 1.4408?

1.4408 (GX5CrNiMo19-11-2) is the European cast equivalent of 316 stainless, also designated CF8M / J92900, and the most common molybdenum-bearing cast austenitic grade. It is used wherever chloride and pitting resistance beyond CF8 is needed, giving 260 MPa yield, 530 MPa tensile, 45 % elongation, 160 HB, service to 800 °C and a corrosion-resistance score of 72; it is supplied as sand, investment, centrifugal and HIP + annealed castings. Its 0.08 % max carbon can sensitise after welding, so use CF3M for as-welded pressure service, and 1.4308 (CF8) where molybdenum is unnecessary. 1.4408 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). 1.4408 has a yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) — weaker than 84% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 193 GPa (28 Msi).

Working with 1.4408

Is 1.4408 easy to machine?

Machines like 316: gummy and work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, 60–120 m/min and flood coolant; avoid dwelling and watch for hard casting skin/sand inclusions.

Can 1.4408 be welded?

Very good weldability with 316L/E316L-15 or ER316L filler (or 309L to carbon steel); the 5–20% δ-ferrite suppresses hot cracking, keep interpass low and re-solution-anneal repaired pressure castings where the code requires it.

Can 1.4408 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand or investment castings; excellent fluidity and low hot-tearing tendency, but allow ~2.0–2.5% solidification shrinkage and generous risering on heavy sections, plus 1050–1120 °C water quench after casting.

Machines like 316: gummy and work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, 60–120 m/min and flood coolant; avoid dwelling and watch for hard casting skin/sand inclusions.

Can 1.4408 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (75/100). Very good weldability with 316L/E316L-15 or ER316L filler (or 309L to carbon steel); the 5–20% δ-ferrite suppresses hot cracking, keep interpass low and re-solution-anneal repaired pressure castings where the code requires it.
