What is 1.4818?

1.4818 (X6CrNiSiNCe19-10) is a silicon-, nitrogen- and cerium-modified 18-10 austenitic stainless developed for better oxidation and scaling resistance at elevated temperature than standard 304. It is available as hot- and cold-rolled sheet (1D, 2B, 2R), annealed and cold-drawn bar, annealed and as-welded tube, with 330 MPa yield, 650 MPa tensile, 45 % elongation and 180 HB (88 HRB) and a 1050 °C maximum service temperature. Silicon and nitrogen make it tougher and more work-hardening than 304, so formability is rated 72 and cutting speeds are lower; for still higher temperatures step up to a 21Cr-11Ni (1.4835-type) grade. 1.4818 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4818 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) — weaker than 57% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4818

Is 1.4818 easy to machine?

Machines like 304 but tougher and more gummy from Si+N — use rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide, 60–100 m/min, heavy feed to cut under the work-hardened layer and flood coolant.

Can 1.4818 be welded?

Excellent weldability by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW without pre- or post-weld heat treatment; use matching, 22-12H or 253 MA type fillers, keep interpass below ~150 °C and heat input moderate to limit ferrite/σ issues.

Can 1.4818 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms and deep draws well but work-hardens faster than 304 — allow extra springback and interstage annealing at 1050–1100 °C; hot work at 1150–900 °C with rapid cooling.

1.4818 — frequently asked

What is 1.4818 used for?

1.4818 is typically used for furnace fittings, exhaust components and heat-treatment fixtures. In short: oxidation-resistant 18-10; service to 1050 °C; welds without heat treatment.

What is the yield strength of 1.4818?

1.4818 has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) — weaker than 57% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is 1.4818 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (33/100, worse than 57% of stainless steel grades). Machines like 304 but tougher and more gummy from Si+N — use rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide, 60–100 m/min, heavy feed to cut under the work-hardened layer and flood coolant.

Can 1.4818 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (80/100). Excellent weldability by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW without pre- or post-weld heat treatment; use matching, 22-12H or 253 MA type fillers, keep interpass below ~150 °C and heat input moderate to limit ferrite/σ issues.
