What is 1.4371?
1.4371 (X2CrMnNiN17-7-5) is a low-carbon, nitrogen-alloyed CrMnNi austenitic stainless developed as a low-nickel alternative to 301 and 304 for cost-sensitive structural sheet. The low carbon plus nitrogen gives roughly 420 MPa yield, 750 MPa tensile, 50 % elongation and 195 HB (94 HRB) with good weldability (score 78) and formability (82), and it is stocked as CR-2B and HR-1D sheet plus C700 to C1300 cold-worked tempers. Corrosion resistance is the limit — score 48, clearly below 304 — and service temperature is capped near 550 °C, so coat or upgrade to 1.4301 (304) for chloride or outdoor exposure. 1.4371 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4371 has a yield strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) — stronger than 64% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4371
Is 1.4371 easy to machine?
Machines like a tough 200-series austenitic: rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid the severe work-hardened skin.
Can 1.4371 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/resistance methods without preheat or post-weld anneal; use 307/308L-type or over-alloyed filler and keep interpass temperature low, avoid arc-air gouging fume issues from Mn.
Can 1.4371 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-drawing and roll-forming behaviour but very high work-hardening rate — expect 20–30 % higher press loads and greater springback than 304, and generous bend radii in cold-worked tempers.
