What is 310L NAG?
310L NAG (UNS S30600) is a nitrogen-alloyed, low-carbon 25Cr-20Ni-type austenitic stainless containing roughly 4 % silicon, giving improved high-temperature strength and stabilized corrosion resistance for heat-treating equipment and nitric acid service. Annealed material runs about 305 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 48 % elongation and 165 HB (85 HRB), and is available as annealed plate, 1D and 2B sheet, cold-drawn bar and annealed welded tube. The silicon makes it abrasive and slow to machine and produces a Si-rich scale that must be pickled after hot work or welding; where nitric-acid resistance is not required, standard 310S is the simpler choice. 310L NAG has a density of 7.5 g/cm³ (0.271 lb/in³), lighter than 99% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). 310L NAG has a yield strength of 305 MPa (44.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 66% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 48% and the elastic modulus is 193 GPa (28 Msi).

Working with 310L NAG
Is 310L NAG easy to machine?
Slow, abrasive cutting: the ~4 % Si and strong work hardening demand rigid setups, positive-rake carbide/coated inserts, heavy flood coolant, low speed and constant feed to avoid glazing.
Can 310L NAG be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching high-Si (S30600-type) filler; keep heat input and interpass temperature low, no preheat, and solution-anneal or use matching filler when full nitric-acid resistance across the weld is required.
Can 310L NAG be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms like an austenitic 300 series but with higher springback and work-hardening; hot work 1150–900 °C followed by solution anneal at 1050–1120 °C and rapid quench — avoid slow cooling through 550–850 °C.
310L NAG chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on 310L NAG?
Pickle (HNO₃-HF) and passivate after hot work or welding to remove Si-rich scale; electropolishing gives the cleanest surface for acid service. Not anodizable.
