Finish specifications — frequently asked

Are MIL specifications free?

Yes. Documents issued by the US Department of Defense (MIL-, DOD-, MIL-STD-, FED-STD-) are US Government works in the public domain. The official source is the DLA ASSIST Quick Search; FabDigit mirrors the current revision of the finish-related ones here for convenience. SAE AMS, ASTM and ISO standards are copyrighted and must be bought from their publishers — the pages here explain their structure so the drawing can be read, but do not reproduce them.

What is the difference between MIL-C-5541 and MIL-DTL-5541?

They are the same document. In the late 1990s the DoD renamed many MIL-C (coating) and MIL-P (plating) specifications to MIL-DTL (detail specification) or MIL-PRF (performance specification) as part of acquisition reform; the technical content carried over into the next revision. A drawing that says MIL-C-5541 is satisfied by the current MIL-DTL-5541.

A MIL spec is cancelled — what do I put on the drawing?

Use the superseding document named in the cancellation notice, usually a SAE AMS or ASTM standard: MIL-C-26074 electroless nickel → AMS 2404 / ASTM B733; QQ-P-416 cadmium → AMS-QQ-P-416; QQ-N-290 nickel → AMS-QQ-N-290; MIL-P-23377 primer → MIL-PRF-23377 (still active). Each specification page here shows its status and successor.

What do Type and Class mean on a finish specification?

Type usually selects the chemistry or process variant (MIL-A-8625 Type II = sulfuric anodize, Type III = hard anodize; MIL-DTL-5541 Type I = hexavalent chromate, Type II = chromium-free), while Class selects the performance level or an option such as dye or thickness (MIL-A-8625 Class 1 = undyed, Class 2 = dyed; ASTM B633 SC1–SC4 = 5–25 µm thickness service conditions). Grade, Form and Method appear in some documents for finer choices. The Type / Class table on each page lists what every combination requires.
