What is 1.4311?
1.4311 (X2CrNiN18-10, 304LN, S30453, SUS304LN) is a low-carbon 18/10 austenitic stainless with controlled nitrogen, which raises yield strength by solid solution without reintroducing sensitization risk. It is used for welded pressure and cryogenic equipment in annealed, HRAP, 2B, cold-drawn and 1/4H–FH strip conditions; annealed material gives 320 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 50 % elongation and 170 HB (86 HRB), with service to 700 °C. Nitrogen raises press loads and lowers machinability relative to 1.4307, and chloride pitting resistance (score 58) still calls for a molybdenum grade such as 1.4404. 1.4311 has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4311 has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 60% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4311
Is 1.4311 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, 60–120 m/min and copious coolant; avoid dwelling.
Can 1.4311 be welded?
Excellent by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW/SAW with 308L or 308LN filler; no preheat, interpass <150 °C, no post-weld anneal needed thanks to C ≤0.03 % (use N-bearing filler to keep weld strength).
Can 1.4311 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms and deep draws well but needs ~20–30 % higher press force and more springback allowance than 304L; hot work 1150–900 °C then solution anneal and quench.
