What is 202?

202 (UNS S20200, SUS202) is a manganese–nickel austenitic stainless steel from the 2xx family, using Mn and N to replace part of the nickel of 301/304. It is used as a low-cost substitute in decorative and non-critical structural work, supplied as hot-rolled annealed plate, annealed sheet and cold-rolled strip in 1/8 through full hard tempers, with 345 MPa yield, 655 MPa tensile, 55 % elongation and a formability score of 80. Corrosion resistance (score 55) sits below 304 and it is not suited to chloride or marine exposure; specify 304 where staining is unacceptable. 202 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 202 has a yield strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — weaker than 54% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 55% and the elastic modulus is 197 GPa (28.6 Msi).

Working with 202

Is 202 easy to machine?

Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, heavy feed with no dwell and copious coolant; roughly 40 % of 1212 free-cutting rate.

Can 202 be welded?

Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/resistance methods with 308L or 309L filler; keep heat input low, avoid 425–815 °C dwell to limit sensitization, and back-purge tube welds.

Can 202 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent deep-draw and roll-form behaviour but a high work-hardening rate — allow extra press tonnage, generous bend radii and interstage annealing for severe draws.

Manufacturability

The process limits FabDigit applies to 202. Every 202 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
