What is 1.4319?
1.4319 (X5CrNi17-7, 301-type) is a lower-carbon metastable austenitic Cr-Ni stainless that develops its strength by cold work rather than by heat treatment. It is supplied as strip and sheet in Annealed, C700, 1/4H, 1/2H, 3/4H, FH and FH+SR conditions, so one chemistry covers deep-drawn parts and spring-tempered components; annealed material is about 290 MPa yield, 700 MPa tensile, 55 % elongation and 88 HRB, with a formability score of 88. Corrosion resistance is moderate for the 300 series and chloride exposure should be avoided, while oxidation-limited service runs to roughly 800 °C. Where work-hardened strength is not needed, 1.4301 (304) is the simpler choice. 1.4319 has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4319 has a yield strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — weaker than 72% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 55% and the elastic modulus is 195 GPa (28.3 Msi).

Working with 1.4319
Is 1.4319 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed and flood coolant; avoid dwelling and re-cutting the hardened skin.
Can 1.4319 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW/resistance welded with 308L/307 fillers; the low carbon avoids sensitisation, but keep heat input low to limit distortion and hot-crack risk in this low-ferrite chemistry.
Can 1.4319 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-draw and stretch behaviour when annealed, with very high work-hardening rate — allow for large springback, high press loads and interstage annealing on severe draws.
