What is ER2553?

ER2553 (S39553) is a super duplex stainless bare filler wire matched to 2507 and 255 (S32550) base metals for high-strength service in chloride and acid environments. Supplied as drawn wire for GTAW, GMAW and SAW, it deposits typically 600 MPa yield, 830 MPa tensile, 22% elongation and 265 HB (27 HRC) with a corrosion rating of 84. Heat input and ferrite level must be controlled, and service is capped near 280 °C because of 475 °C embrittlement and sigma phase. ER2209 is the choice for standard 2205 duplex joints. ER2553 has a density of 7.81 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,350°C (2,462 °F). ER2553 has a yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 86% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with ER2553

Is ER2553 easy to machine?

Weld metal machines like super duplex — very work-hardening; use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed (~40–60 m/min) and heavy positive feed with flood coolant.

Can ER2553 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/SAW on 255, S32550, S32750 and dissimilar joints; keep heat input ~0.5–1.5 kJ/mm, interpass ≤150 °C, no preheat, use Ar+2–3 % N₂ backing to keep ferrite 35–55 FN.

Can ER2553 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied only as drawn wire; the deposit itself has limited cold formability and high springback — bending of duplex weldments should be done above 3t radius.

ER2553 — frequently asked

What is ER2553 used for?

ER2553 is typically used for super duplex piping, offshore platforms and chemical tankers. In short: super duplex filler wire; matched to 255 and 2507; high-chloride weld deposits.

What is the yield strength of ER2553?

ER2553 has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 86% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ER2553 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (22/100, worse than 95% of stainless steel grades). Weld metal machines like super duplex — very work-hardening; use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed (~40–60 m/min) and heavy positive feed with flood coolant.

Can ER2553 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100).

What is the maximum service temperature of ER2553?

ER2553 is rated for continuous use to about 280°C (536 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ER2553-AW and ER2553-SA?

AW is the default condition — standard condition for GTAW/GMAW joints in 255/2507 base metal — use with controlled heat input and ≤150 °C interpass. SA: pick when the weldment or overlay can be re-solution-annealed to dissolve sigma/secondary phases and restore balanced 50/50 ferrite-austenite. Yield strength is 600 MPa in AW versus 560 MPa in SA.
