What is 1.4451?

1.4451 (GX2CrNiMoCuN26-5-3-3) is a cast high-chromium stainless steel alloyed with molybdenum, copper and nitrogen, giving a duplex-leaning austenitic-ferritic structure. It is selected for aggressive chloride and sulfuric-acid environments and is supplied as sand or centrifugal castings, solution annealed and quenched, with HIP available. The default condition gives 510 MPa yield, 700 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and 245 HB; service is limited to about 280 °C and machinability is low (score 30). Where austenitic ductility and higher chloride pitting resistance matter more than strength, cast 1.4557 (CK3MCuN) is the nearer choice. 1.4451 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4451 has a yield strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — stronger than 78% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

What is the yield strength of 1.4451?

1.4451 has a typical yield strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — stronger than 78% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is 1.4451 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, worse than 70% of stainless steel grades). Work-hardens and runs hot: use rigid setups, sharp coated carbide, low speed / high positive feed, generous flood coolant and avoid dwelling.

Can 1.4451 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (55/100). Weldable with matching 25Cr super-duplex or 25-9-4 filler; keep interpass below ~150 °C, control heat input for a balanced ferrite/austenite weld, and re-solution-anneal heavily repaired castings.
