What is S24000?
S24000 (XM-29, Nitronic 33) is a nitrogen-strengthened 18Cr-3Ni-13Mn austenitic stainless of the 18-3Mn family, in which manganese and nitrogen replace most of the nickel to give roughly double the annealed yield of 304 at 400 MPa yield, 724 MPa tensile and 50 % elongation while staying non-magnetic. It is stocked as bar, wire and strip in annealed through cold-drawn, quarter- to full-hard and high-strength tempers for retaining rings and fasteners. Machinability is low (score 30) because of the high work-hardening rate, and chloride resistance is only 304-class (score 57); use 316 or a 22Cr-13Ni-5Mn grade where pitting service is expected. Maximum service temperature is 760 °C. S24000 has a density of 7.79 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³), lighter than 56% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). S24000 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 724 MPa (105 ksi) — stronger than 57% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 197 GPa (28.6 Msi).

Working with S24000
Is S24000 easy to machine?
Machines like a tough 300-series but with a higher work-hardening rate — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds, low-to-moderate speeds and never dwell in the cut.
Can S24000 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/PAW without preheat; use nitrogen-bearing austenitic filler (AWS E/ER209 or 240 type), keep interpass temperature low and avoid excessive heat input to limit nitride precipitation.
Can S24000 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms and deep draws well in the annealed condition but requires roughly double the press force of 304 and generous interstage annealing; hot work 1150–1200 °C, finish above 950 °C, then solution anneal ~1065 °C and quench.
S24000 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on S24000?
Pickle/passivate per ASTM A967 after hot work or welding; takes standard mechanical and electropolish finishes, no anodizing — plating is only for wear or galling control.
