What is 1.4419?
1.4419 (X38CrMo14, comparable to 440B) is a high-carbon Cr-Mo martensitic stainless steel from the EN 10088 family, with molybdenum added to improve hardenability and hardened-state strength. Engineers choose it for cutting and wear parts that must hold an edge with some corrosion resistance; it is supplied as bar, plate and forgings in +A, +C and +QT conditions up to 54 HRC. Default annealed values are 480 MPa yield, 800 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and 225 HB, with service to 450 °C. Corrosion resistance is modest and weldability poor; consider 1.4034/420 for easier processing or 440C for maximum wear. 1.4419 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4419 has a yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 75% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 215 GPa (31.2 Msi).

Working with 1.4419
Is 1.4419 easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed state with sharp, rigid setups, carbide tooling and generous coolant; hardened 45–56 HRC material practically requires grinding, EDM or CBN/ceramic hard-turning.
Can 1.4419 be welded?
Poor weldability — preheat 200–300 °C, low-heat-input TIG with matching or 309-type filler, and temper immediately after welding; avoid welding on hardened parts.
Can 1.4419 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forming limited to gentle bends in the annealed condition; hot work at 1050–850 °C followed by slow cooling and a full soft anneal (approx. 750–800 °C, furnace cool).
