What is 1.4405?
1.4405 (GX4CrNiMo16-5-1) is a high-alloy soft martensitic cast stainless steel with 16% Cr, 5% Ni and molybdenum, giving corrosion resistance and toughness beyond CA6NM-type grades. Sand and investment castings, optionally HIP treated, are quenched-and-tempered for high-head hydraulic and marine service, reaching about 620 MPa yield, 850 MPa tensile, 18% elongation and 285 HB (29 HRC). Machinability is the weak point of the family (score 35) and service is capped at 400 °C; where higher pitting resistance in seawater is required, the higher-Mo 1.4411 (GX4CrNiMo16-5-2) is the direct step up. 1.4405 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4405 has a yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) — stronger than 88% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4405
Is 1.4405 easy to machine?
Machine in the tempered condition with rigid setups, sharp coated carbide, low speed / high feed and generous coolant; work-hardening skin and cast surface scale demand a heavy first cut.
Can 1.4405 be welded?
Readily weldable with matching 16-5-1 or 410NiMo filler; preheat 100–150 °C, keep interpass below ~180 °C and re-temper at 580–600 °C after major repairs.
Can 1.4405 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand or investment cast with generous feeding and chills; solidification shrinkage ~4–5 %, so risering and directional solidification control soundness.
