What is 1.4606?
1.4606 (X5NiCrTiMoVB25-15-2, S66286) is an austenitic Ni-Cr-Ti-Mo-V-B precipitation-hardening stainless in the A-286 family, hardened by Ti/Al-bearing precipitates rather than martensite. It is used where elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance are needed together with corrosion resistance: 700 MPa yield, 1010 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation and 32 HRC (310 HB) in the default condition, with service to 650 °C and +AT, +P880, +P980 and CD+P conditions on file as bar, wire and forgings. Machinability (25/100) and formability (20/100) are poor and welded joints need re-solution and re-aging. 1.4980 is the same alloy under its other EN number. 1.4606 has a density of 7.94 g/cm³ (0.287 lb/in³), heavier than 78% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). 1.4606 has a yield strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,010 MPa (146 ksi) — stronger than 92% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 201 GPa (29.2 Msi).

Working with 1.4606
Is 1.4606 easy to machine?
Machine preferably in +AT condition with rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tools, heavy constant feed and flood coolant; the alloy work-hardens fast and rubbing/dwell instantly glazes the surface.
Can 1.4606 be welded?
GTAW/EBW with matching A-286 filler in the solution-annealed state, low heat input and no preheat; re-solution + re-age after welding to avoid strain-age (HAZ) cracking in thick or restrained joints.
Can 1.4606 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot work 1090–980 °C then water quench; cold forming (thread rolling, heading) only in the +AT condition with high forming loads and interstage anneals — aged material is essentially non-formable.
