What is SUS317J1?
SUS317J1 is a JIS austenitic stainless in the 317 family with molybdenum raised above standard 317 for higher pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. It is specified for chemical and marine process equipment — tanks, liners and paper-mill hardware — and is available hot-rolled No.1, cold-rolled 2B and BA, cold drawn, in 1/4H to full-hard strip and as-welded tube. Annealed properties are 285 MPa yield, 580 MPa tensile, 50 % elongation and 160 HB, with service to 500 °C. Cost and lead time exceed 316L and non-Japanese stock is thin; 317L or a 6 % Mo austenitic are the usual alternatives. SUS317J1 has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,375°C (2,507 °F). SUS317J1 has a yield strength of 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 580 MPa (84.1 ksi) — weaker than 74% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 195 GPa (28.3 Msi).

Working with SUS317J1
Is SUS317J1 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, heavy positive feed to cut under the hardened layer, ~30–40 % of 1212 speeds and flood coolant.
Can SUS317J1 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with low heat input and no preheat; use overalloyed filler (ER317L, or 625/Alloy 22 for maximum pitting resistance) and back-purge, then pickle/passivate.
Can SUS317J1 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability but high work-hardening and springback; needs ~50 % more press force than carbon steel, and heavily formed parts benefit from re-solution annealing at 1050–1150 °C with rapid quench.
