What is E308Mo?
E308Mo is a standard-carbon, 308-type austenitic stainless covered electrode to AWS A5.4 (UNS W30820) with a molybdenum addition that raises pitting resistance above plain E308. It is chosen for mixed 304/316 fabrications and moderate chloride service, and is supplied as -15, -16 and -17 coated electrodes for SMAW. As-welded deposits run about 420 MPa yield, 590 MPa tensile and 38 % elongation, with service to roughly 650 °C. Where the base metal is low-carbon or sections are heavy and sensitisation is a concern, E316L is the nearer choice. E308Mo has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). E308Mo has a yield strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) — stronger than 64% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 38% and the elastic modulus is 193 GPa (28 Msi).

Working with E308Mo
Is E308Mo easy to machine?
Weld deposit work-hardens rapidly — use sharp carbide tools, positive rake, heavy feeds and flood coolant; grinding of caps is usually easier than machining.
Can E308Mo be welded?
SMAW with DCEP (AC also for -16/-17); keep interpass below ~150 °C, use stringer beads, no preheat, redry electrodes at 250–300 °C to avoid porosity.
Can E308Mo be formed, bent or molded?
Deposited metal is ductile but strain-hardens quickly; avoid heavy cold straightening across weld beads.

E308Mo — frequently asked
What is E308Mo used for?
E308Mo is typically used for mixed 304/316 fabrications, moderate chloride service and general stainless piping. In short: mo-boosted 308 electrode; bridges 304 and 316; better pitting than E308.
What is the yield strength of E308Mo?
E308Mo has a typical yield strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) — stronger than 64% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is E308Mo easy to machine?

Can E308Mo be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (90/100). SMAW with DCEP (AC also for -16/-17); keep interpass below ~150 °C, use stringer beads, no preheat, redry electrodes at 250–300 °C to avoid porosity.
