What is 1.4615?
1.4615 (X3CrMnNiCu15-8-5-3, S20100) is a low-nickel Cr-Mn-Ni-Cu austenitic stainless developed as a cost-reduced substitute for standard 300-series grades in non-critical parts. It is supplied as annealed, BA, hot-rolled annealed and pickled, cold-rolled and spring-temper strip and sheet, with about 330 MPa yield, 700 MPa tensile, 50 % elongation and 200 HB in the annealed condition. Corrosion resistance is the weak point (rated 45 of 100), and heavy cold work makes it magnetic; move to 304/1.4301 for wet or chloride-bearing service. 1.4615 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4615 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — weaker than 57% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 197 GPa (28.6 Msi).

Working with 1.4615
Is 1.4615 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds, low-to-moderate speed and flood coolant; expect ~40 % of 1212 free-cutting rate.
Can 1.4615 be welded?
Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/resistance welding with 308L/307 (Cr-Mn) type filler, no preheat, low heat input and no post-weld heat treatment; higher N and Cu raise hot-crack and heat-tint sensitivity, so pickle or passivate welds.
Can 1.4615 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-drawing and stamping behaviour thanks to Cu; springback and press loads are higher than 304, and heavy cold work induces magnetic deformation martensite — interstage annealing helps on severe draws.

What surface finishes work on 1.4615?
Takes BA, No.4 brushed and mirror-polished finishes and PVD coating well; not anodisable — passivate after machining/welding and avoid chloride-containing cleaners to prevent pitting.
