Working with E2209-SA

Is E2209 easy to machine?

Weld metal machines like 2205 duplex — rigid setup, sharp carbide, low speed / heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened layer; expect ~25 % of 1212 rating.

Can E2209 be welded?

SMAW electrode for 2205/2304/S31803/S32205 and duplex-to-austenitic or duplex-to-carbon-steel joints; redry per maker (≈250–300 °C for -15/-16), keep interpass ≤150 °C, heat input ~0.5–2.5 kJ/mm, no preheat and normally no PWHT.

Can E2209 be formed, bent or molded?

Not applicable to the electrode itself; the deposited duplex weld metal cold-forms with high springback and roughly double the force of 304, so allow generous bend radii.

What surface finishes work on E2209?

Pickle/passivate (nitric or citric acid paste) after removing slag and heat tint; mechanical brushing must use stainless-only wire wheels to avoid iron contamination.

E2209-SA — frequently asked

What is E2209-SA used for?

E2209-SA is typically used for duplex 2205 pressure vessels, offshore and marine structures and desalination equipment. In short: highest-strength stainless filler; chloride pitting resistance; matches 2205 duplex.

What is the yield strength of E2209-SA?

E2209-SA has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 740 MPa (107 ksi) — stronger than 79% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is E2209-SA easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 51% of stainless steel grades). Weld metal machines like 2205 duplex — rigid setup, sharp carbide, low speed / heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened layer; expect ~25 % of 1212 rating.

Can E2209-SA be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100).

What surface finishes work on E2209-SA?

Pickle/passivate (nitric or citric acid paste) after removing slag and heat tint; mechanical brushing must use stainless-only wire wheels to avoid iron contamination.

Can E2209-SA be formed, bent or molded?

Not applicable to the electrode itself; the deposited duplex weld metal cold-forms with high springback and roughly double the force of 304, so allow generous bend radii.

What is the maximum service temperature of E2209-SA?

E2209-SA is rated for continuous use to about 280°C (536 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between E2209-AW and E2209-SA?

AW is the default condition — standard supply/use condition: duplex weld metal used directly after welding with controlled heat input and interpass temperature. SA: used when the whole fabrication is re-solution annealed (e.g. after cold forming or to dissolve σ/nitrides), giving lower strength but the highest ductility and toughness. Yield strength is 620 MPa in AW versus 520 MPa in SA.
