Working with 310L NAG-AW
Is 310L NAG easy to machine?
Slow, abrasive cutting: the ~4 % Si and strong work hardening demand rigid setups, positive-rake carbide/coated inserts, heavy flood coolant, low speed and constant feed to avoid glazing.
Can 310L NAG be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching high-Si (S30600-type) filler; keep heat input and interpass temperature low, no preheat, and solution-anneal or use matching filler when full nitric-acid resistance across the weld is required.
Can 310L NAG be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms like an austenitic 300 series but with higher springback and work-hardening; hot work 1150–900 °C followed by solution anneal at 1050–1120 °C and rapid quench — avoid slow cooling through 550–850 °C.
What surface finishes work on 310L NAG?
Pickle (HNO₃-HF) and passivate after hot work or welding to remove Si-rich scale; electropolishing gives the cleanest surface for acid service. Not anodizable.

310L NAG-AW — frequently asked
What is 310L NAG-AW used for?
310L NAG-AW is typically used for furnace muffles, radiant tubes and heat-treatment fixtures. In short: high-silicon nitric-acid stainless; low-carbon 310-type; stabilised weld-zone corrosion resistance.
What is the yield strength of 310L NAG-AW?
310L NAG-AW has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) — weaker than 57% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is 310L NAG-AW easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, worse than 88% of stainless steel grades). Slow, abrasive cutting: the ~4 % Si and strong work hardening demand rigid setups, positive-rake carbide/coated inserts, heavy flood coolant, low speed and constant feed to avoid glazing.
Can 310L NAG-AW be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching high-Si (S30600-type) filler; keep heat input and interpass temperature low, no preheat, and solution-anneal or use matching filler when full nitric-acid resistance across the weld is required.

What is the maximum service temperature of 310L NAG-AW?
310L NAG-AW is rated for continuous use to about 550°C (1,022 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 310L NAG Annealed and 310L NAG-CD?
Annealed is the default condition — standard supply condition for all product forms; maximum corrosion resistance in nitric acid service. CD: bar for machined valve, pump and fastener parts in nitric acid plants; higher strength, lower ductility. Yield strength is 305 MPa in Annealed versus 560 MPa in CD.
