Working with E317-16

Is E317 easy to machine?

Weld deposit machines like 317 stainless: gummy and work-hardening — use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, heavy feed and flood coolant.

Can E317 be welded?

SMAW with short arc, stringer beads and interpass ≤150 °C; keep 4–10 FN delta ferrite for hot-cracking resistance; redry electrodes (≈250–300 °C, 1 h for -15 basic type) before use.

Can E317 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; the deposit is ductile (≈38 % elongation) and tolerates weld-repair peening and light straightening.

What surface finishes work on E317?

Grind, pickle and passivate (ASTM A380/A967) or brush with stainless-only tools to restore the passive film; do not anodize.

E317-16 — frequently asked

What is E317-16 used for?

E317-16 is typically used for pulp and paper equipment, chemical process vessels and flue gas desulfurization systems. In short: higher Mo than E316; improved pitting resistance; chloride and acid service filler.

What is the yield strength of E317-16?

E317-16 has a typical yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 605 MPa (87.7 ksi) — stronger than 68% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is E317-16 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (33/100, worse than 57% of stainless steel grades). Weld deposit machines like 317 stainless: gummy and work-hardening — use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, heavy feed and flood coolant.

Can E317-16 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (86/100). SMAW with short arc, stringer beads and interpass ≤150 °C; keep 4–10 FN delta ferrite for hot-cracking resistance; redry electrodes (≈250–300 °C, 1 h for -15 basic type) before use.

Can E317-16 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; the deposit is ductile (≈38 % elongation) and tolerates weld-repair peening and light straightening.

What is the maximum service temperature of E317-16?

E317-16 is rated for continuous use to about 760°C (1,400 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between E317-AW and E317-15?

AW is the default condition — default condition: properties of the undiluted deposit in the as-welded state, no post-weld heat treatment. E317-15: pick for the cleanest, lowest-oxygen deposit and best impact toughness on heavy or restrained joints; DC electrode positive only. Yield strength is 440 MPa in AW versus 450 MPa in E317-15.
