Working with E316LMn-AW

Is E316LMn easy to machine?

Deposit work-hardens strongly and is gummy — use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feed, rigid setup and flood coolant; grind slag/oxide off before finish cuts.

Can E316LMn be welded?

Redry electrodes (rutile ~150 °C, basic ~250–300 °C), weld with low heat input, stringer beads, interpass below ~150 °C and no preheat — the 0 FN fully austenitic deposit is hot-crack sensitive if the pool is large or crater-filled hot.

Can E316LMn be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; the deposit itself is highly ductile (≈35–40 % elongation) and tolerates cold straightening of welded assemblies without cracking.

What surface finishes work on E316LMn?

Pickle and passivate or electropolish after slag removal; use stainless-only brushes and grinding media to avoid iron contamination and keep the nitrogen-alloyed passive film intact.
