What is Almar 362?
Almar 362 (S46020) is a low-nickel martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that is soft and formable in the annealed martensitic condition and hardened by a single low-temperature age. In the aged condition it reaches about 1205 MPa yield, 1275 MPa tensile, 15 % elongation and 40 HRC (375 HB), with service to roughly 425 °C, and it cold forms considerably better than 17-4 PH. Corrosion resistance is moderate (rated 50 of 100) and stock is limited to bar and strip from few suppliers; 17-4 PH is the mainstream alternative. Almar 362 has a density of 7.76 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 58% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). Almar 362 has a yield strength of 1,205 MPa (175 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,275 MPa (185 ksi) — stronger than 99% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with Almar 362
Is Almar 362 easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed condition with rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds and flood coolant; expect ~35–45 % of AISI 1212 and account for ~0.05–0.1 % growth on aging.
Can Almar 362 be welded?
GTAW/PAW autogenously or with matching/347 filler; keep heat input low, then re-solution-anneal and age for full properties (a straight age recovers most strength).
Can Almar 362 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold form, bend and deep-draw in the annealed martensitic temper — it is notably more formable than 17-4 PH — then harden with a single low-temperature age with minimal distortion.
