Corrosion ResistanceFair50/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryGood resistance to high-temperature oxidation and combustion gases; general atmospheric and mild-acid resistance similar to 316-class steel, but low Ni/Mo margin makes it vulnerable to chlorides, pitting and strong reducing acids; sensitization/σ-phase possible after long exposure at 550–850 °C.

Working with E349 PWHT

Is E349 easy to machine?

Weld deposit machines like a work-hardening austenitic stainless: rigid setup, sharp carbide tools, positive rake, heavy feed and low speed, flood coolant.

Can E349 be welded?

SMAW only; redry electrodes ~250–300 °C, keep interpass below ~150 °C, use stringer beads and DCEP (or AC for -16/-17) to preserve 2–8 FN ferrite and avoid hot cracking.

Can E349 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product — deposit shape is set by welding technique; grind or machine to final contour rather than cold form.

What surface finishes work on E349?

Remove all slag between passes; pickle/passivate or abrasive-blast with stainless media before service to restore the chromium oxide film — no anodizing.

E349 PWHT — frequently asked

What is E349 PWHT used for?

E349 PWHT is typically used for jet engine exhaust components, high-temperature bolting and brackets, elevated-temperature pressure parts and repair of 19-9DL alloy. In short: creep-matching 19-9DL filler; 815 °C service deposit; SMAW electrodes only.

What is the yield strength of E349 PWHT?

E349 PWHT has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 86% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is E349 PWHT easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, worse than 88% of stainless steel grades). Weld deposit machines like a work-hardening austenitic stainless: rigid setup, sharp carbide tools, positive rake, heavy feed and low speed, flood coolant.

Can E349 PWHT be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (75/100). SMAW only; redry electrodes ~250–300 °C, keep interpass below ~150 °C, use stringer beads and DCEP (or AC for -16/-17) to preserve 2–8 FN ferrite and avoid hot cracking.

What surface finishes work on E349 PWHT?

Can E349 PWHT be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product — deposit shape is set by welding technique; grind or machine to final contour rather than cold form.

What is the maximum service temperature of E349 PWHT?

E349 PWHT is rated for continuous use to about 815°C (1,499 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between E349-16 and E349 PWHT?

E349-16 is the default condition — most commonly stocked form: smooth arc and easy slag removal, all-position, AC-capable — pick for general repair and fabrication of 19-9DL type parts. PWHT: use when the weldment is stress-relieved or ages in service: Nb/Ti/W carbide precipitation raises strength and hardness while cutting room-temperature ductility and impact energy. Yield strength is 550 MPa in E349-16 versus 600 MPa in PWHT.
