Working with E307-16
Is E307 easy to machine?
Fully austenitic deposit work-hardens rapidly — use sharp carbide tools, positive rake, heavy feed and no dwell; grinding is often easier than turning.
Can E307 be welded?
Redry electrodes per maker (rutile ~150 °C, basic ~300 °C), keep interpass below ~150 °C, use short arc and stringer beads to limit dilution when joining stainless to carbon/high-Mn steel.
Can E307 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; deposited metal is ductile (>30% elongation) and tolerates the strain of restrained joints and buffer layers.
What surface finishes work on E307?
Remove slag fully, then pickle/passivate or mechanically polish; heat tint must be removed to restore corrosion resistance.

E307-16 — frequently asked
What is E307-16 used for?
E307-16 is typically used for dissimilar metal welding, manganese steel to stainless joints, hardfacing underlayers and crack-sensitive joints. In short: most crack-resistant austenitic filler; dissimilar-joint workhorse; buffer layer for hardfacing.
What is the yield strength of E307-16?
E307-16 has a typical yield strength of 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 630 MPa (91.4 ksi) — stronger than 67% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is E307-16 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (32/100, worse than 62% of stainless steel grades). Fully austenitic deposit work-hardens rapidly — use sharp carbide tools, positive rake, heavy feed and no dwell; grinding is often easier than turning.
Can E307-16 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (93/100). Redry electrodes per maker (rutile ~150 °C, basic ~300 °C), keep interpass below ~150 °C, use short arc and stringer beads to limit dilution when joining stainless to carbon/high-Mn steel.
What surface finishes work on E307-16?
Remove slag fully, then pickle/passivate or mechanically polish; heat tint must be removed to restore corrosion resistance.
Can E307-16 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; deposited metal is ductile (>30% elongation) and tolerates the strain of restrained joints and buffer layers.
What is the maximum service temperature of E307-16?
E307-16 is rated for continuous use to about 700°C (1,292 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between E307-AW and E307-SR?
AW is the default condition — standard condition for dissimilar-metal and buffer-layer joints; use as deposited without PWHT whenever the code permits. SR: condition after the joint receives a base-metal PWHT; expect slightly higher strength and lower ductility/toughness from carbide and σ-phase formation. Yield strength is 440 MPa in AW versus 460 MPa in SR.
