Working with S30530-CD

Is S30530 easy to machine?

Gummy and work-hardening like 304 but slightly kinder; use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy coolant and constant feed to avoid glazing.

Can S30530 be welded?

Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/resistance methods with 308L filler, but the copper content raises hot-cracking sensitivity — keep heat input low and dilution controlled; not a grade chosen for welded assemblies.

Can S30530 be formed, bent or molded?

Its reason for existing: low work-hardening rate allows severe multi-blow cold heading, thread rolling and deep upsetting with far less die stress and inter-anneal than 304/302.

What surface finishes work on S30530?

Passivate per ASTM A967 or electropolish after forming; can be mechanically polished, tumbled or bright-annealed — no anodising.

S30530-CD — frequently asked

What is S30530-CD used for?

S30530-CD is typically used for cold-headed fasteners, screws and rivets, socket-head cap screws, thread-rolled studs and bolts, self-tapping screws and blind rivet bodies. In short: lowest work-hardening austenitic; dedicated cold-heading grade; fewer inter-anneals than 304.

What is the yield strength of S30530-CD?

S30530-CD has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 86% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.

Is S30530-CD easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (50/100, better than 90% of stainless steel grades). Gummy and work-hardening like 304 but slightly kinder; use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy coolant and constant feed to avoid glazing.

Can S30530-CD be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/resistance methods with 308L filler, but the copper content raises hot-cracking sensitivity — keep heat input low and dilution controlled; not a grade chosen for welded assemblies.

What surface finishes work on S30530-CD?

Passivate per ASTM A967 or electropolish after forming; can be mechanically polished, tumbled or bright-annealed — no anodising.

Can S30530-CD be formed, bent or molded?

Its reason for existing: low work-hardening rate allows severe multi-blow cold heading, thread rolling and deep upsetting with far less die stress and inter-anneal than 304/302.

What is the maximum service temperature of S30530-CD?

S30530-CD is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between S30530-ANN and S30530-FH?

ANN is the default condition — standard supply condition for cold heading, riveting and multi-station forming — softest, maximum formability. FH: highest strength wire/strip condition; almost no remaining formability, bend only over generous radii. Yield strength is 240 MPa in ANN versus 1,050 MPa in FH.
