Working with ER349 SOL-ANN

Is ER349 easy to machine?

Machine the deposit like a high-strength austenitic stainless: rigid setup, sharp carbide, positive rake, heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and glazing.

Can ER349 be welded?

Use for GTAW/GMAW/SAW on 349-type and stabilized austenitic stainless; keep interpass temperature low, moderate heat input and 4–10 FN ferrite to limit hot cracking, and use pure Ar (TIG) or Ar+1–2% O₂/CO₂ (MIG) with good back-purging.

Can ER349 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as cold-drawn wire; the weld deposit itself is strong and work-hardens rapidly, so limit cold straightening or bending of welded joints and anneal if heavy forming follows.

What surface finishes work on ER349?

Pickle and passivate or mechanically blend weld beads; do not anodize — electropolishing or glass-bead/abrasive blending plus passivation restores the chromium oxide film.

ER349 SOL-ANN — frequently asked

What is ER349 SOL-ANN used for?

ER349 SOL-ANN is typically used for high-temperature stabilized stainless welds, turbine and jet engine component repair, hot-section ducting and manifold joints, furnace fixtures and heat-treat baskets, stabilized stainless pressure parts operating above 550 °C and overlay on 349-type and stabilized austenitic base metal. In short: strongest stabilized austenitic filler; creep resistance to 815 °C; ta/Nb dual stabilization.

What is the yield strength of ER349 SOL-ANN?

ER349 SOL-ANN has a typical yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 660 MPa (95.7 ksi) — stronger than 52% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is ER349 SOL-ANN easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (38/100, better than 63% of stainless steel grades). Machine the deposit like a high-strength austenitic stainless: rigid setup, sharp carbide, positive rake, heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and glazing.

Can ER349 SOL-ANN be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (72/100).

What surface finishes work on ER349 SOL-ANN?

Pickle and passivate or mechanically blend weld beads; do not anodize — electropolishing or glass-bead/abrasive blending plus passivation restores the chromium oxide film.

Can ER349 SOL-ANN be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as cold-drawn wire; the weld deposit itself is strong and work-hardens rapidly, so limit cold straightening or bending of welded joints and anneal if heavy forming follows.

What is the maximum service temperature of ER349 SOL-ANN?

ER349 SOL-ANN is rated for continuous use to about 815°C (1,499 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ER349 AS-WELDED and ER349 SOL-ANN?

AS-WELDED is the default condition — default condition: properties of the undiluted deposit as laid down by TIG/MIG without any post-weld heat treatment. SOL-ANN: use when the whole fabrication is solution treated after welding to homogenize the deposit and maximize ductility/corrosion resistance. Yield strength is 520 MPa in AS-WELDED versus 380 MPa in SOL-ANN.
