Working with E330-17
Is E330 easy to machine?
Deposits machine like a high-nickel austenitic alloy — gummy and strongly work-hardening; use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feed, low speed and flood coolant, and expect grinding rather than turning for weld dressing.
Can E330 be welded?
Keep heat input and interpass temperature low (≤150 °C), use stringer beads and convex profiles, and dry basic electrodes at 250–300 °C — the ferrite-free deposit is hot-crack sensitive and dilution from carbon steel must be minimised.
Can E330 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; weld beads can be peened or lightly cold worked, but heavy cold forming of the deposit risks cracking and a post-weld solution anneal is preferred.
What surface finishes work on E330?
Pickle and passivate or abrasive-blast/wire-brush with stainless-only tools to remove heat tint; not anodizable, and painting is unnecessary for hot-gas service.

E330-17 — frequently asked
What is E330-17 used for?
E330-17 is typically used for furnace muffles, heat-treating baskets and fixtures and kiln components. In short: 1100 °C oxidation resistance; alloy 330 matching filler; not for aqueous corrosion.
What is the yield strength of E330-17?
E330-17 has a typical yield strength of 410 MPa (59.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) — stronger than 60% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is E330-17 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (27/100, worse than 83% of stainless steel grades). Deposits machine like a high-nickel austenitic alloy — gummy and strongly work-hardening; use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feed, low speed and flood coolant, and expect grinding rather than turning for weld dressing.
Can E330-17 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (55/100). Keep heat input and interpass temperature low (≤150 °C), use stringer beads and convex profiles, and dry basic electrodes at 250–300 °C — the ferrite-free deposit is hot-crack sensitive and dilution from carbon steel must be minimised.
What surface finishes work on E330-17?
Pickle and passivate or abrasive-blast/wire-brush with stainless-only tools to remove heat tint; not anodizable, and painting is unnecessary for hot-gas service.
Can E330-17 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; weld beads can be peened or lightly cold worked, but heavy cold forming of the deposit risks cracking and a post-weld solution anneal is preferred.
What is the maximum service temperature of E330-17?
E330-17 is rated for continuous use to about 1,100°C (2,012 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between E330-AW and E330-SR?
AW is the default condition — default condition: properties of the undiluted as-deposited weld metal, no post-weld heat treatment. SR: use when carbides and residual stress from multi-pass welding must be dissolved before service; restores ductility but lowers strength slightly. Yield strength is 400 MPa in AW versus 320 MPa in SR.
