What is S275JR?
S275JR is a hot-rolled non-alloy structural steel to EN 10025-2 (1.0044) with 275 MPa minimum yield and typical values of 300 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and 130 HB. It gives more load capacity than S235JR while keeping excellent weldability (rated 95) and good cold formability, and is available as hot-rolled or cold-rolled plate, sheet and sections, galvanized or normalized. It has no corrosion resistance and a service limit of about 350 °C, so coating is mandatory. Q275, SS490 and A572 Grade 42 are the near equivalents; move to S355J2 where higher strength or guaranteed low-temperature toughness is required. S275JR has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). S275JR has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 86% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with S275JR
Is S275JR easy to machine?
Free machining at moderate speeds with HSS or coated carbide; gummy chips and built-up edge in hot-rolled state — use positive rake, generous feed and coolant.
Can S275JR be welded?
Weldable by all common processes (SMAW/GMAW/SAW/FCAW) with E7018 or ER70S-6 class consumables; preheat normally unnecessary below ~30 mm, keep hydrogen low on thick restrained joints.
Can S275JR be formed, bent or molded?
Good cold bending and roll forming; typical inside bend radius 1–2 t for hot-rolled plate, hot work at 900–1200 °C, avoid forming in the 250–400 °C blue-brittle range.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to S275JR. Every S275JR part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
