What is S275J0?

S275J0 (1.0143) is a higher-strength non-alloy structural steel to EN 10025-2 with 27 J impact energy guaranteed at 0 °C. It is used where more load capacity than S235 is required while keeping simple weldability, and is supplied as-rolled, normalized, thermomechanically rolled and cold-drawn, with 300 MPa yield, 460 MPa tensile, 23 % elongation and 140 HB. Formability is slightly lower than S235 and the steel has no corrosion resistance, so blasting and coating are required outdoors. Choose S275J2 for -20 °C toughness or S355 for a further step in strength. S275J0 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). S275J0 has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) — weaker than 86% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 23% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with S275J0

Is S275J0 easy to machine?

Machines like ordinary mild steel at ~65 % of 1212; gummy chips and built-up edge — use positive rake, sharp tooling and generous coolant.

Can S275J0 be welded?

Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with E70/G3Si1 consumables; CEV ≤0.40 means little or no preheat below ~30 mm, preheat 100–150 °C for heavy restrained joints.

Can S275J0 be formed, bent or molded?

Good cold bending and press-braking; use inside bend radius ≥1.5–2 t transverse to rolling direction, hot forming 900–1050 °C followed by normalizing.
