What is A633 Grade C?

A633 Grade C is a normalized high-strength low-alloy structural plate with guaranteed notch toughness, broadly equivalent to S355J2 and Q355C and available normalized, in heavy section, normalized plus stress relieved, or with CVN testing at -40 °C. Default properties are 385 MPa yield, 530 MPa tensile, 25 % elongation and 160 HB, with service to 400 °C, which suits welded structures and machinery frames operating in cold climates. It offers no corrosion resistance and must be coated, and hot forming above 900 °C requires re-normalizing to restore certified properties. A242 is the alternative when bare weathering exposure is wanted. A633 Grade C has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). A633 Grade C has a yield strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) — weaker than 65% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with A633 Grade C

Is A633 Grade C easy to machine?

Machines like normalized C-Mn steel at ~60 % of 1212; use carbide, moderate speeds and positive rake, expect gummy chips at low feeds.

Can A633 Grade C be welded?

Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW/FCAW with E70/ER70S consumables; low carbon equivalent means preheat only for heavy sections (>40 mm) or high restraint, keep heat input moderate to preserve HAZ toughness.

Can A633 Grade C be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bends readily at 2–3 t inside radius transverse to rolling; hot forming above 900 °C requires re-normalizing to restore certified properties.
