What is HC420LA?

HC420LA is a cold-rolled Nb/Ti microalloyed high-strength low-alloy steel to EN 10268, reaching its 420 MPa yield class through grain refinement and precipitation strengthening rather than added carbon, which keeps the carbon equivalent low. Engineers use it for weight-reduced stamped structures, and it is supplied as bare cold-rolled sheet or zinc-coated coil (CR+Z, CR+ZF, CR+ZE). Elongation and deep-drawability are clearly below DC04/IF steel and springback is high; bare material has no corrosion resistance and must be coated or painted. Choose DC04 where draw depth matters more than strength. HC420LA has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,500°C (2,732 °F). HC420LA has a yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — stronger than 55% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with HC420LA

Is HC420LA easy to machine?

Machines like a tough low-carbon steel — sticky chips, so use sharp carbide, positive rake and generous feed; mostly processed by blanking, laser cutting and piercing rather than turning.

Can HC420LA be welded?

Low carbon equivalent gives excellent resistance-spot, MAG and laser weldability with no preheat; on coated grades increase current/force and allow for zinc fume extraction.

Can HC420LA be formed, bent or molded?

Good stretch-forming and bending, but low r-value means poor deep drawing and noticeable springback — compensate die geometry and use generous bend radii (≥1.5×t).

Manufacturability

The process limits FabDigit applies to HC420LA. Every HC420LA part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
