What is S275N?
S275N is a normalized fine-grain structural steel to EN 10025-3 (1.0490), also cross-referenced to Q275, offering 275 MPa class yield with guaranteed impact energy. Engineers pick it for welded structures where the normalized condition improves toughness and through-thickness behaviour; it is supplied as plate and sections, including a heavy-thickness (N-HEAVY) option and the sub-zero NL variant. Typical values are 300 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and 135 HB. It has no corrosion resistance and must be coated; use S275NL for low-temperature service. S275N has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). S275N has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 86% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with S275N
Is S275N easy to machine?
Machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use sharp HSS/carbide, moderate speeds and good chip breaking as gummy ferrite can smear.
Can S275N be welded?
Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with matching C-Mn filler; CEV ≤0.40 means little or no preheat for t≤30 mm, keep heat input controlled to preserve normalized fine grain.
Can S275N be formed, bent or molded?
Cold bends readily to ~2–3 t bend radius with grain-favourable orientation; hot forming above 900 °C should be followed by re-normalizing to restore properties.
