What is E355?
E355 (1.0580 / 1.0920, EN 10305-1; related to S355K2 and Q355) is a medium-carbon non-alloy engineering steel used mainly for cold-drawn precision tube that needs higher mechanical strength than low-carbon grades. It is stocked hot-rolled, cold-drawn, normalized, annealed, stress-relieved and in hard-drawn (+C) form for hydraulic cylinder tube, piston rods and welded structures; the default condition lists 490 MPa yield, 650 MPa tensile, 10 % elongation and 190 HB. It has no inherent corrosion resistance, and hard-drawn +C tube retains only 4–6 % elongation, so specify +A or +LC material where cold forming follows. E355 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). E355 has a yield strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) — stronger than 61% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with E355
Is E355 easy to machine?
Machines like a 0.2 %C C-Mn steel (~60 % of 1212); cold-drawn +C/+SR chips break better than annealed stock, use carbide at 150–220 m/min with coolant and expect some spring-back/distortion when heavy stock is removed from +C tube.
Can E355 be welded?
Readily welded by MAG/SAW/TIG with G3Si1/ER70S-6 class filler; CEV ≈ 0.40–0.45 so preheat 100–150 °C for wall thicknesses above ~30 mm or in restrained joints, and re-normalize if full toughness is needed.
Can E355 be formed, bent or molded?
+A and +LC bend, flare and expand well (bend radius ≥ 2×D); +C hard-drawn tube has only 4–6 % elongation and should be stress relieved or annealed before cold forming; hot forming at 850–1050 °C followed by normalizing.

What surface finishes work on E355?
No inherent corrosion resistance — specify phosphate + oil, zinc plating, paint or hard-chrome/CrN on piston rods; ID of cylinder tube is roller-burnished or honed to Ra 0.2–0.4 µm; it takes nitriding and induction hardening only modestly due to low carbon.
